Week 3 of 14
Into the land
Days 15 to 21: Deuteronomy 14 to 1 Samuel 13, 83 chapters.
Moses finishes his farewell and dies within sight of the land. Joshua leads Israel across the Jordan, and the land is divided among the tribes. Then Judges shows the slide: the people forget God, suffer, cry out, are rescued by a judge, and forget again. Listen for the line that closes the book: "Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes." Ruth is a quiet break, a story of loyalty that ends with the birth of the grandfather of David. First Samuel brings the last judge, Samuel, and the first king, Saul, whose reign starts going wrong almost at once.
Watch for the refrain at the end of Judges.
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”Joshua 1:9
